Makiko Hirabayashi Trio releases their third album, "Surely" (Enja2013).
This time recorded in Munich while on tour in Germany, the album includes 13 original tracks, mostly composed by Makiko Hirabayashi, with a few contrasting compositions by Marilyn Mazur and some short improvised pieces.
"Hirabayashi's music combines many elements: the need for a clear balance of artistic drama, the joy in controlled playfulness, the desire for creative communication with her partners. ---- She forms contrasts that appear simultaneously gentle and striking, explores harmonies that shimmer yet do not dazzle, shapes rhythms that both carry the listener away and discreetly carry him along."(liner notes by Ralf Dombrowski) Elements of jazz, classical music, Far Eastern music and Nordic sounds are all incorporated into an original and engaging idiom of her own.

Born in Tokyo, raised in Japan and Hong Kong, educated in Boston and now living in Copenhagen, Hirabayashi is a cosmopolitan spirit and habitually perceives the new as an opportunity. Collaboration with the world famous percussionist and drummer Marilyn Mazur (Miles Davis 85-89, Jan Gabarek 91-05) and bassist Klavs Hovman has opened many creative doors for the pianist. Since the release of their first album, "Makiko" (Enja 2006), the trio has enjoyed fine reviews throughout the world, and given concerts in Germany, Japan, Denmark, Sweden, Austria, Luxembourg and Switzerland.
The trio's second album, "Hide And Seek" (Enja 2009) received two awards in Jazz Critique Magazine, Japan -Jazz Audio Disk Award and Jazz Melody Award for the title tune.
